Audience Research

My audience research is based upon two sources: a physical handout survey and an online one through SurveyMonkey. In total I have got 30 results; 15 handouts and 15 online results. To start with I am going to begin analysing the online survey results and they seemed to be the most helpful results.
 Online
Responses:

These first two questions are to get some background on the audience to see if there is a common ground among them, to see if maybe their specific responses seem more in detail than those of other age groups. I was attempting to target specific age groups, and I feel like I was fairly successful at getting responses from the 16-24 age group that I am making my target audience. I did get responses outside of this age bracket and they may come in useful to contrast their opinions with other those in the younger bracket. I managed to capture more males in my online survey, however this does even out with my handout survey.

The favourite genre seemed to be 'Indie' with 10 responses but 'Acoustic' followed close behind with 8. These are good responses for me because they relate right back to Lester's music, being Acoustic Folk, which is often too associated with the Indie genre too, artists such as Bon Iver, Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes.

I asked this question because I was interested how downloads have excelled if any amongst my target audience, however considering my target audience being a relatively young crowd, I would have expected digital downloads to be substantially higher than physical copies of music however it seems that only by 1 response digital downloads had won, overall digital downloads got 14/15 and CDs and Vinyl still got 13/15 (86%) which proves still worthwhile releasing on both platforms, Lester's album 'Deadly Quiet' has been released both on CD and iTunes, Amazon, etc.

Considering that my music video is to be released on YouTube, the fact that the streaming box got 13/15 (86%) is substantial and left TV music channels with mere 20%, showing the growth within the industry and potentially the rise once again in Music Videos.

I have impressions that you could challenge, maybe not going down the traditional black and white route mixed in with performance but you could also conform. His appearance does conform, yes.

It should be based upon narrative and follow conventions or totally distort them from the genre in the music video. Should be filmed on good varied locations where possible, links back to the lyrics.
10/14/2014 9:46 AM
An indie, well directed and art vibe to the whole music video, shallow focus's etc. Potentially a washed out coloring, or toned film.
10/14/2014 9:41 AM
Slow, Soft colours
10/14/2014 9:40 AM
1. I think folk will have a really arthouse indie vibe to it 2. The video should have an earthy colour pallette consisting of sepia or green like tint and hipster like 3. yes it is very folk like with its suspenders
10/10/2014 7:54 PM
I believe that his appearance does conform. The expectation would be an extremely strong story line.
10/8/2014 3:00 PM
Its pretty chill yet meaningful music and mainly seemed to be performed by people who have real musical talent, one couldn't not like it. Either a video of the artist/musicians performing or a story portraying the song and yes I do believe Lester rather does give the stereotypical impression of a folk artist.
10/7/2014 8:59 PM
Hillbilly farmers playing instruments in barns while their horses dance around
10/7/2014 8:45 PM
I would expect a strong story line and character roles in order to fit in well with the lyrics and his appearance does conform well to the genre.
10/7/2014 10:54 AM
I think of farms and hay barrels, a bit like Mumford & Sons. I would think of this guy as being a typical folk artist and his appearance conforms to the genre.
9/30/2014 10:10 AM
Acoustic Folk music tends to be on the calmer side and i would expect the music video to follow. His appearance definitely conforms to stereotype
9/29/2014 10:17 AM
Lester's appearance does seem to conform to what I would expect of the folk genre; casual shirt, humble appearance- I'd expect scenes like this still in a music video, with him playing the guitar, maybe some narrative.
9/29/2014 9:29 AM
Slower, warmer conforms with open button shirt and natural look, doesn't conform because of his age
9/29/2014 9:25 AM
I expect it to be vintage style, checked shirts etc. letters style seems to fit
9/26/2014 7:38 PM
I would expect usually to see the story be unveiled through the lyrics of the song. Lester does conform very much to the genre and would also be useful for a performance based performance.
9/26/2014 10:51 AM

I created this video when undecided wether to do a partial performance based music video and so I thought that it was crucial for him to conform visually to the genre. This question is still relevant none the less because it gives specifically what people perceive what the folk genre artists would stereotypically include in their music videos. The responses have helped me decide to keep to the idea of one of my respondents: "earthy colour palette consisting of sepia or green like tint", also keeping to the conventions of the folk genre.

For the next question I utilised the fact my audience would have access to the internet and asked them to follow a link to the below performance by Lester. Despite not being the song that I have chosen to create a music video for, it maintains the storytelling theme throughout.

The lyrics are very interesting and could allow to make for strong links between visuals, subtly not so obvious.
10/14/2014 9:52 AM
Narrative but with features of concept based because when the inclusion of semiotics is present, it will allow for a deeper and more substantial video.
10/14/2014 9:46 AM
The track totally conforms to the genre therefore should follow its stereotypes. Maybe look at Angus and Julia Stone's music videos. It should be narrative and concept at the same time, in order to create deep meaning. Use semiotics where possible.
10/14/2014 9:41 AM
narrative
10/14/2014 9:40 AM
I think this type of genre would benefit from a blend of narrative but with conceptual elements such as iconography and symbolism similar to anna calvis desire but instead of a performance have a narrative
10/10/2014 7:54 PM
Narrative should be strong in the video but also have some hidden meanings through semiotics etc.
10/8/2014 3:00 PM
A narrative as the song is very much about the lyrics and he is telling a story whereas I feel conceptual videos are better associated with songs that have a more instrumental focus or are more dance music.
10/7/2014 8:59 PM
Maybe conceptual as there could be some cool visuals which grabs the attention of the audience even more as it is quite a slow song
10/7/2014 8:45 PM
Narrative based would be good because it would allow for a strong story line but add in symbolism where possible.
10/7/2014 10:54 AM
I think a narrative would suit this song very well as it tells a moving story and would complement the song well.
9/30/2014 10:10 AM
The lyrics of the song have sentimental meaning which adds value to the song. I think the song would benefit from a more narrative video ,helping to visualise what is found in the lyrics.
9/29/2014 10:17 AM
The song is very relaxing to listen to, the riff is great, and the lyrics are very humble. I think that a narrative video would work best for this track as there is a clear story being told by the lyrics and the video should compliment this.
9/29/2014 9:29 AM
a Narrative would fit well, following the lyrics, I also like the clear emotion of the artist and believe it could link well with the video
9/29/2014 9:25 AM
I think the song has a clear meaning and should be conceptual, and abstract
9/26/2014 7:38 PM
It's obvious for that this song the narrative based route would be the best way to go or even conceptual as the lyrics may be a bit too obvious.
9/26/2014 10:51 AM

The responses were extremely helpful in deciding to do a narrative based music but also to include elements of concept based as well, however I should really attempt with the song Emma to include as much symbolism as possible, it has been a regular in the responses, like you can see above.

I would like to keep the narrative as close to the lyrics and poem as possible but use the conceptual route too and using symbolism & iconography for the underlying theme of mental health and depression however upon first view, it will be more revolved around young adult relationships.

It depends, most key elements involve being well directed with a good varied cast of actors. It is important to spend a lot of time editing and shoot as much footage as possible, more than you potentially planned.
10/14/2014 9:52 AM
The story is important and good actors within the video. HD video and well edited
10/14/2014 9:46 AM
Quality. Story Actors Location Well edited
10/14/2014 9:41 AM
high quality, varied shots and shot lengths and also colour and clear theme.

10/10/2014 7:54 PM
Good quality. Good actors and story.
10/8/2014 3:00 PM
Where appropriate links with the lyrics or an overall portrayal of the emotion or message of a song, accurate lip syncing, well executed finish a flows well, it is rather nice to feature the artist as it is after all showcasing their talents.
10/7/2014 8:59 PM
Interesting visual design, good song, directed well etc
10/7/2014 8:45 PM
Actors, cinematography, lighting and costumes.
10/7/2014 10:54 AM
The visuals should complement the lyrics of the music, much like in a film with its the soundtrack.
9/30/2014 10:10 AM
A video that is both unique and the links with the lyrics.
9/29/2014 10:17 AM
A good link with the lyrics that brings a new meaning to the track or encaptures the mood of the song.
9/29/2014 9:29 AM
Quality and definition, post production such as colour correction
9/29/2014 9:25 AM
something with a bit of a story
9/26/2014 7:38 PM
A high definition and well lit shot. So important to feature appropriate mise-en-scene too.
9/26/2014 10:51 AM

This is an important question to me and it presented to me that I clearly need to make things such the video quality of the music video and acting a priority however pointed out areas such as costumes which I had yet to consider in depth.

These last two questions were for reference to and for me to decide wether to do a concept based or narrative based, the fact that no one selected performance based videos makes it clear that for my audience, if I wish my video to be successful.

Handout

This is the survey that I created in order to hand out to members of my target audience between the ages of 16 and 18, in order to begin getting more specific responses, I have chosen a few of that have been most useful.

This one outlined the despite having a fairly dark story, I must present something humble in terms of the themes in the video. This respondent pointed out the need for the link between the visuals and lyrics, presenting a clear cut story but potentially with symbolism included there.

This one presents ideas on post production, using longer length shots in order to match the beat of the song, which is fairly slow, and thus this is a good suggestion to bear in mind whilst in the planning stages of the video, in order to shoot those longer shots. Again, we have mention of the links to the lyrics and conforming to the storytelling idea for a music video. It's once again clear here that HD quality is recommended.

The flowers and fields idea is a good one to keep in mind when planning the mise-en-scene elements of the video, as I could present a contrast potentially of what the lyrics are offering. As usual, respondent has stated, links with lyrics are important as is having a clear story to the music video for this genre.

This respondent recognises the genre for being extremely emotional and even presents a video that I can take inspiration from, Sia's Chandelier:

The respondent has stated how the young dancer portrays the emotion of the song and she then turns to meet the artist in the video. This is a good way to potentially implement Lester, if I were to chose to go down a partial performance based music video.

  1. A good/proficient piece of research, which demonstrates some very effective and specific questions that the subjects have been able to access well. You reflect on some of the significance of results and have presented the results very well.

Comment on ideas you have had as a direct result of the survey
Explain who the actual target audience is in an overall concluding statement (either in the audience profile or in the survey results).
Apply in brief the key theories of audience (hypodermic/passive and pluralist/active - e.g. which of Maslow's needs will your audience members have fulfilled by your video?
