Human Traffic - Alienation

Alienation of youth is one of the most prominent themes in the entire film and it is even directly referenced and noted to during one of the scenes in the film, where they all parody the national anthem and put their generations spin upon it, see screenshot below. Alienation is a term which is best described in this context is their lack of mutual ground and loss of real identity and purpose, this is all presented at various scenes in the movie and is often used in parts to juxtapose the completely different lifestyles of generations, particularly visible during the table scene.

All the main characters (especially the males) are seen having family troubles, especially the characters like Jip, whose mother is a prostitute and then also we have Koop whose father is in another world of fantasy since being placed in psychiatric care since his wife left him. Then there's Moff, still living at home with his parents, constantly in some sort of fight with his father and then there's even a scene where he is embarrassed to be caught masturbating by his mother.

The alienation is inter-generational clearly, and they are all struggling to communicate with their elder peers (e.g. the television interview scene where they are portrayed as a bad example of a generation because they party and take drugs) and also parents. In many places, they are often rude to one another, like with Kips family. Kip even goes in to say in the film "I swear sometimes we're living on different planets because there is no f**king way of communicating with you all, who the f**k are you people anyway?" this perfectly describes the alienation, how he just can't talk to his own parents because he shares no common ground is to me, very sad.

  1. A very analytical approach Cesco, well done. You could also comment on the fact that it appears that the teenage characters are trying to create their own society, rather than conforming to the society created by the older generation within the film. This then causes tension between the two.
