Digipaks are used for special editions of CD albums or singles and they use a different style packaging to the traditional or standard album. They typically resemble slightly a book and they have the ability to fold and reveal the disc and maybe other special additions to the CD such as a poster. They are often fabricated out of a heavier material or card and will open up like a booklet. It really gained a lot of popularity during the early 2000s and are still at rise today (despite the low percentage of CDs still being purchased), this could be to do with producers making the materials out of recycled paper or other sustainable sources. They are often used in order to specify a special edition or to attract people to buy the physical CD as opposed to the far more popular (now) digital downloads.
An Example of one:
Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo (2000)
Tanto Tempo is an album from 2000 by Brazilian bossa nova singer, Bebel Gilberto, it has a very minimal design to the digipak and this falls suite to other Bossa Nova such as Stan Getz and Sergio Mendes who also have a similar minimalistic design with little colours:

The inside cover contains a series of square images that gives an insight into her life in Brazil, USA and showing her family and friends, this gives that extra personal touch to the album and this links closely with the personal lyrics of the album, giving a further context. If you compare this with a pop genre album, I believe that there would be a clear difference and focus more on sexual aspects rather than a personal touch on the presentation of the album.
On the inside cover it displays the track listing and those incorporated in the production of the specific song. This is replacing the booklet or insert that you usually receive with a standard CD album. The design of the digipak is a tri-fold and it's made out of card and plastic in order to house the CD.
